NWHS is a nonprofit organization that focuses on studying, documenting, and preserving women’s history in the United States.
Research
Women’s contributions to history are rarely recorded accurately and fully in academic texts and curriculums. Through independent research and partnerships with historians, NWHS identifies and studies women that have had a major impact on U.S. history.
Oral History
Most oral history projects are centered in urban areas and often neglect women’s voices. NWHS’s oral history project, Women: Remembered, concentrates on recording women’s voices in small towns and communities and also preserving photographs and other historical documents that would otherwise be lost.
Education
Including a more complete women’s history in our nation’s educational system will create a fuller, more accurate version of history that is colorful and intriguing. Including women’s voices will also provide girls and boys role models from history that will inspire them to pursue greatness and to be better civic adults.
“Women have been taught that, for us, the earth is flat, and if we venture out, we will fall off the edge.”
The strong, fascinating women that made our country deserve to be recognized in our surveys of history. Help us bring attention to this problem and take steps to solve it.
The National Women's Historical Society is dedicated to empowering women today by illuminating the lives of influential and remarkable women of all races, sexualities, and backgrounds who have been overlooked in the modern historical narrative.
